Turnaround: Fixing New York City's Buses

is presented by the

Bus Turnaround Coalition

, a diverse group of New Yorkers determined to turn around the poor service that plagues the city's bus system and the 2.5 million rides taken on it every weekday. We are winning increased attention from our leaders and greater resources for high quality, fast and reliable bus service for all neighborhoods in New York City.

The Bus Turnaround Coalition has identified the top ten prime streets for practical, near-term bus improvements across all five New York City boroughs. These ten bus routes suffer from the greatest disparity in travel times between peak and off-peak hours, meaning 250,000 riders traveling during prime commute times--when most riders are on the system--face unnecessarily slow, unreliable commutes to work, school, and important appointments.

Our list of suggested improvements includes

  • bus bulbs and boarding islands
  • optimized traffic signals,
  • queue-jumps, and
  • dedicated lanes that would be applied where appropriate.

The routes and corridors selected for these treatments have high ridership, roads that can support street improvements without negative impacts for single-occupancy vehicles, and, most importantly, a wide variance in travel times between peak and off-peak hours. We are calling on the NYC Department of Transportation to take the lead on making these improvements in 2017.

Mission

Acknowledgements

The Bus Turnaround Coalition is indebted to Nathan Johnson, whose knowledge of the MTA's Bus Time data is likely unparalleled outside of the MTA. Without his dedication and technical expertise the bus performance analysis presented here would not have been possible. Neil Freeman and Kuan Butts also made valuable contributions to this analysis. Nathan's talents may never have been applied to these data without a call to action from City Councilman Ben Kallos, a champion of bus riders in New York's Fifth District and beyond, who continues to support this campaign. We also thank BetaNYC, which created the space for Councilman Kallos to pitch Nathan and others on the idea of using Bus Time data to measure bus performance, and continues to create opportunities for civic technologists to improve the lives of New Yorkers.
